Do you work with HNC students?
Yes – approximately one-third of On Track’s participants have been studying at HNC level. HNC students are entitled to enter degree study at level two under the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework, although some institutions (and students themselves) prefer to use the HNC for entry to level one. On Track supports HNC students to develop degree-level study skills and gives them a valuable insight into what they can expect at university.
Is On Track free?
Yes – On Track is fully funded by the West Forum so there is no charge for our service to learners or their learning providers.
What is the age group of the On Track tutors and what level of experience do they have?
At the time of writing On Track has 50 tutors on the books. They comprise a mixture of present undergraduate and postgraduate students and some recent graduates. Our tutors mirror the age range of students at our partner colleges and universities in that they are of all ages.
To gain employment with On Track, tutors have to demonstrate that they have experience and competence in classroom facilitating and/ or teaching. They also undertake a programme of training to ensure that they are fully aware of the issues faced by students in transition and how best to address them in the classroom.
What materials do you give to students?
On Track has developed a pack of materials since its inception in 2002 which address study and learning skills and provide insight into the university experience. Students work through various activities in class, such as participating in a mock lecture and tutorial, and reflecting on their learning styles. They also receive information handouts on matters such as library searches and referencing.
We do not cover the academic content of any subject areas, and we do not seek to advise students on degree/ university choices.
A selection of our materials are available here for you to see for yourself (log in as a guest)
What do the college/ workplace need to provide?
On Track is delivered in the learner’s normal learning environment so we require colleges/ workplaces to provide accommodation for the sessions.
For the fullest On Track experience we ask for computers with internet access to be provided for at least one On Track session, and our tutors require access to Powerpoint or an overhead projector (OHP).
The established practice has been for the course contact to meet the tutors before the first session to show them to the room.
